IA DE DIRECTOR RYAN WISE BLAMES NCLB LAW FOR SCHOOL FAILURES

9-11-15

Greetings, Andrew Phillips, Cedar Rapids Gazette School News Reporter and all—

Your 600 word article in today’s 9-11-15 Cedar Rapids Gazette reported IA Department of Education Director Ryan Wise is blaming the NCLB law for poor Iowa school performance, reported in the just released Iowa Report Card.  https://www.educateiowa.gov/sites/files/ed/documents/2015StateReportCard.pdf

This is the Report Card that doesn’t mention Iowa adopted and uses the lowest student Proficiency Standard in the Midwest—and can’t meet it.  It's the 41st National Percentile Rank, 9 percentage points below the national average.

You reported:  “Department director Ryan Wise, in a conference call with reporters, criticized the law's evaluation and remediation processes. 'Today's report is based on a law that is fundamentally flawed, a law that does not drive improvement in schools,' Wise said.”

Wise seems to be joining the growing crowd of incompetent, overpaid public school officials who blame everyone but themselves for poor public school performance!!  They even blame the parents, who were educated in the public schools and raised the kids who are also being blamed.  The media might let him get away with it, but Iowalive won’t!!

Iowalive hopes Wise isn’t working behind closed doors to find a way to weasel out of the lowest student  Proficiency Standard in the Midwest, Iowa fought the feds and adopted--and can’t meet!!  He should raise the standard to at least the 65th National Percentile Rank, and lead schools to meet and exceed it!!  When will reporters ask him for his plan to do just that?
