WHY SUMMER READING, TEACHER LEADERSHIP & OTHER 'EDUCATION FIXES' FAILED

12-20-16

Greetings,  Lisa Bartusek, Executive Director Iowa Association of School Boards and all—

Please forward this post to all school boards in the state.  Thank you very much.

For starters, Iowa schools have serious education problems and educators are not well known for their problem solving skills!!  And they have great difficulty discerning the difference between a change and an improvement, and between an activity and a result.

But before you read on about why the fixes failed, please click and review these two websites to learn of the education fix failures of three Summer Reading programs and the Teacher Leadership & Compensation System.

SCHOOL BOARDS--TEACHER LEADERSHIP & COMPENSATION SYSTEM FAILED!!

SCHOOL BOARDS--ALL 3 IA SUMMER READING PROGRAMS FAILED

They were preceded by the following education fix failures, that educators foisted on non-suspecting legislators, governors, school boards, parents and kids. Equally disappointing, educators have yet to determine why they failed.  Pease read on!

To make matters worse, many educators are fixated on the presumption the students are flawed, not the education system.   And they presume they are teaching concepts when they aren’t—and haven’t been trained to teach them.  And they don’t realize that memorization does not develop teen minds.

Today’s teachers had an education based on memorization and teaching methods associated with memorization.  Their teacher training programs were also based on a system of memorization.  Even with a teacher leadership program, it is necessary to both educate and train teachers for a system based on concepts (what they are and how to teach them).  Remember the failed attempt of Iowa educators to write their own Iowa Core (in lieu of using the national Common Core)?  They actually thought the memorized algebra order of operations was a concept!

The 3 summer reading programs had kids in class 3 hours per day for 23 days.  That’s 69 hours of instruction.  Even if it had been divided equally among 3 student learning styles, it equates to 23 hours of instruction.   And there was NO gain in reading skills!!  By comparison, the following chart shows Judy Hintz’ students at Educational Resource Associates in West Des Moines, gain 2 grade levels with 23 hours of reading instruction--average!  And public school educators won’t listen to her!!  They bought a therapy dog instead!!

JUDY HINTZ’ STUDENTS GAIN 2 GRADES WITH  23 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION

The Muscatine school district, ranked 291st, 309th and 306th respectively of 335 school districts, in reading, math and science respectively—recently bought a therapy dog to relieve student stresses.  MUSCATINE JOURNAL reporter, LIORA ENGEL- SMITH, reported it in a 512 word article that didn’t mention student achievement.

And Governor Branstad and Senator Mike Gronstal approved teacher pay increases for 23 and 31 years respectively, and Branstad will make it 25 if his push for 2% school funding increases for the next two years are approved.

IS THIS HEAVEN??!!  NO!!  IT’S IOWA!!!  And it has the lowest student proficiency standard in the Midwest—and educators and students can’t meet it!!  http://www.iowalive.net/iowa%20proficiency%20std.htm
