REQUEST FOR SPECIAL SCHOOL PERFORMANCE RECORDS

12-5-17

Greetings, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Waterloo, Cedar Falls School  Officials and all—

Please forward this post to all school board members and administrators in your district.  Thank you.

As in the post below, please provide the records  showing costs involved and how you evaluate and score the student achievement results realized from your special school organizations cited by Leeper in the table below.  Please include DR. SUE ATKINSON (atkinson@partnercom.net) in your response.

Iowalive net workers are  particularly interested in numbers showing the average gains you expected students to achieve and the average gains students actually realized to date.  Also the total cost of the special school to date.

Subject: NUMBERS FOR ARCHITECT LEEPER'S EDUCATION COLUMN IN D. M. REGISTER

Greeting’s, Des Moines Register Editorial Board, Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) and all—

Editors, please forward this post to Guest Column writer, Brad Leeper, architect at INVISION Architecture in Des Moines.  IASB is asked to forward it to all Iowa school boards.   Thank you.

Mr. Leeper’s 500 word guest column was headlined, Iowans should embrace bold changes for education.  The headline writer should have used improvements, rather than changes, as that is what Mr. Leeper was talking about.  There is a difference between a change and an improvement.  A fool can make a change, but not likely an improvement.

What Leeper got right was the need to move schools from a system of memorization (based on data students have memorized) to one of students being able to understand and apply concepts in a variety of ways (which develops more in-depth thinking skills for problem-solving etc.).

To fill the improvement void, the following table presents numbers showing the extent of ‘improvements’ Leeper was talking about.  In addition, for comparison, the  table presents scores for some school districts in the state having different State math rankings.  Notice the strong correlation between better scores and % of teachers teaching concepts.  The same applies to district State math rankings.  This might be a bit beyond what Leeper was talking about, but is still of great importance for improving Iowa schools.

IOWALIVE’S NUMBERS SHOW WHAT ARCHITECT LEEPER WAS TALKING ABOUT

Teachers Teaching Concepts Are Best Teachers

Numbers Were Derived Using Iowalive's   Proprietary Algorithms, Database and More.

Anyone Claiming to Have Better Numbers is Asked to Provide Them.

The Correlation Coefficient of Average Score to % of Teachers Teaching Concepts (Understanding Rather Than Memorization)  is a Convincing .95.   But  Iowa's Universities Have Failed to Improve to Concept-Based Education for Teachers According to the National Council of Teacher Quality.
