2002-2003 STATE
SCHOOL RANKINGS--4TH & 8TH
|
The following rankings for
ALL Iowa schools were prepared from data just recently posted on the Iowa DOE
website—which only allows comparison of FIVE schools. Since the schools are listed in rank order below, you
can either scroll down the list to find your school, or use the edit, find
function--and then enter the name of your school.
Since East Monona and Grand did not report test scores, the rankings are
based on only 368 schools. Schools
reporting scores for 4th grade only have an advantage over other
schools, but that is the way it is for a state that has no school quality
control system in place. Similarly,
there is no way to determine for sure how many student scores some schools fail
to report—despite NCLB requirements.
It
can reasonably be stated that 35% or more of Iowa’s 4th and 8th
grade students are one grade level or more below their enrolled grade
level—and this likely gets worse for high school.
For example, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines have an average of 30% and 39%
of their 4th and 8th students one or more grades below
enrolled grade level. Similarly,
Mason City, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Davenport and Waterloo respectively have
27%, 38%, 39%, 45% and 46% of their 4th and 8th students
one or more grades below enrolled grade level.
You can calculate these percentages for other schools from the table
below--by subtracting the District Overall Average % Prof. value from 100.
Only one Iowa school,
Corwith-Wesley, has all students LESS than one grade level below enrolled grade
level. Because of the state’s
pathetically low 40th National Percentile Rank standard, adopted by
the DOE, there is no way of knowing if Corwith-Wesley, or any school, has ANY
students scoring at Iowa grade level or above!!!
This is unacceptable and must be raised to at least the 65th
National Percentile Rank level to verify students are proficient at or
above grade level when tested.
Note that the rank for each subject for each grade is also listed. For example, Ottumwa is ranked 341st in 8th grade math.
Baxter
continues to improve and has raised its overall state rank from 146th to 33rd
while Cedar Rapids fell from 184th to 283rd and Des Moines fell from 325th to
360th. In general, small schools improved as larger schools
fell in state rank. All can improve their rank because the rankings are
not competitive. All schools can have 100% of the students proficient and
be ranked number 1--but not have ANY students proficient at Iowa grade level,
unfortunately. School names are color coded per the following legend so you can see at a glance the percentage range of students scoring one or more grades below enrolled grade level. |
