UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PROFS ET. AL. SUFFER FROM TENUREITIS

2-4-17

Greetings State Senator Brad Zaun and all--

Several years ago, Senator Chuck Larson accused University of Iowa profs of spending too little time in the classrooms.  The profs inadvertently proved him right with compelling numbers showing they spent much of their time in their offices tutoring students they failed to teach in their classes!! They unwittingly proved Chuck’s point!!

Now you and others have wisely challenged the value of prof tenure to the chagrin of profs and Katherine Tachau President of the University of Iowa Chapter of the  American Association of University Professors, (AAUP), the same misguided group attacking President Harreld.  She is joined by Lois Cox, Chairwomen of the David C. Baldus Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure.

Performance Integrity scores and operating efficiencies for their groups are presented farther below.

Tachau and Cox wrote a misguided 630 word, 2-3-17 Gazette guest column, touting 10 ways prof tenure benefits students and Iowans, but not profs!!  It is very apparent University of Iowa profs are suffering from Tenureitis, a swelling of their insecurity gland, that concerns Senator Zaun and many other Senators.  The following table presents the bogus claims by Tachau and Cox--and their respective translations.

10 BOGUS CLAIMS ABOUT TENURE—AND THEIR TRANSLATIONS

TOP 1O BOGUS TENURE CLAIMS BY UI DIGNITARIES:  Katherine Tachau, president of the University of Iowa chapter of the American Association of University Professors, and Lois Cox, chairwoman of the group's David C. 9. Tenure routinizes intensive evaluation of faculty members' work.  Meaningless evaluations are routine.

6. Tenure promotes effective faculty recruitment and retention--of more insecure profs

5. Tenure helps the economy.  It takes money from students and gives it to profs.

4. Tenure fosters students' creativity and analytical skills--To pay bloated salaries of insecure profs

3. Tenure advantages Iowa communities.  The advantages are bogusly claimed and can't be measured.

2. Tenure increases the value of Iowa degrees.  Parents, Employers & Regents--beware!!

1. Tenure allows professors the independence to do the best work they are capable of doing without fear that they will be fired for their opinions or conclusions.  Na ni na ni na ya, na ni na ni na ya--you can't fire me!!! Tee Hee, Tee Hee!!
