MUSCATINE EDUCATORS' LACK COMMITMENT, CONSEQUENCES & MORE

Greetings, Muscatine School District School Board Members, and all--

COMPARE IOWA READING TEST SCORES FOR ALL GRADES TESTED 2015-2016 shows only 63.66% (219) of Muscatine’s 344  3rd graders are proficient in 3rd grade reading at Iowa’s  41st National Percentile Rank (NPR) standard, which is the lowest in the Midwest and  9 Percentage points (nearly a full grade level) below the national average.  44 Iowa school districts, including most of the 8 larger districts, are even worse.

This means 36.34%  (125) flunked and will soon, and should be, retained in 3rd grade.  And the website’s table also shows the Dept. of Education reports only 35.47% are proficient at the 65th NPR national grade level—which means 64.53% (222) flunked the national standard and would be retained in 3rd grade under the new Iowa retention law.

This typically does not cause chief Muscatine educators, and their Iowa ilk, any serious academic alarm as they consider the failed students to be defective, and not theirs or the school’s fault

Meanwhile, for at least 35 years, Judy Hintz, at Educational Resources Associates in West Des Moines has routinely committed and raised similar student’s reading skills, 2 grade levels in 23 one-hour sessions,  as shown in the following chart.  That’s what she does.  And no one from the school district, school board or Muscatine Journal has talked to Judy about this.  How come?  They obviously don’t care!!!  They certainly haven’t done anything about it.  They too obviously think the students are defective, as bogusly touted by flawed educators--for years.

Parents Pay 3 Times for Such School Failures

1.     They pay for failed public schools

2.    They pay for pay raises for educator failures

3.    They pay Judy Hintz, or other private schools, to fix kids the schools failed to teach

IS THIS HEAVEN FOR IOWA'S FAILED EDUCATORS??  YES!!

However, there might be some hope for the district.  Muscatine Journal reporter Liora Engel-Smith commendably asked Iowalive net worker, and superior educator, Dr. Sue Atkinson, for her 3 greatest education concerns.  They are:

1.    Educator’s understandings of concepts and phonics are so shallow they don’t understand  they are not teaching them effectively,

2.    Universities don’t train teachers how to effectively teach concepts and phonics and

3.    Educators ignore student learning styles and primarily teach memorization.  

Dr. Sue also pointed out there is nothing special about her, except that her undergraduate degrees are in math and physics (concept-based), with four graduate degrees in other disciplines, and a couple of decades of problem-solving in managing an office – as well as being old enough to have lived through the changes in education.  Sue also teaches as an adjunct in higher education these days, with institutions attempting to get degree programs up to international standards.

We can only hope the Journal’s publisher and editor will allow Liora to rigorously question Muscatine’s educators and report their answers—especially regarding evidence showing their commitments and plans to bring all  students up to grade level--and the consequences for not doing so!!!  Muscatine is ranked 291st of 335  state school districts in reading—309th in math and 306th in science. 

And Liora can also question and report educators’ responses to why for the past sixty years, educators (even in their claimed research-based studies) have failed to commit to a true examination of their methods for curriculum and teaching, which both fail during the school year as well as in the summer (where they repeat the same failures).  The state mandating summer school for students who failed during the school year was provably a false presumption foisted by the education lobby.  The commitment of educators was not to improving education but to improving the excuses used to justify the failure of the system.  Researched based is nothing more than eduspeak for trial and error and 3 trial summer reading programs and the Teacher Leadership & Compensation (TLC) System were in error and all failed!!  And Dept. of Education Director Ryan Wise claims the following charts show things are headed in the right direction!!

What are the consequences for these failures?   Are educators’ salaries frozen?  NO!  They get pay raises every year for their failures—they blame on others!  Judy Hintz should open a school in SE  Iowa to show how effective education is practiced!!

Judy makes a commitment and brings students up to or above grade level, who Iowa’s school officials claim can’t learn and can’t be taught.  That is the mess under which educators have buried Muscatine’s and other Iowa school board members, students, parents, Governor and  State Legislators as well.  And there is more.
