RESPONSE TO REPRESENTATIVE BRECKENRIDGE'S FAKE NEWS NEWSLETTER

2-18-17

Greetings, State Representative, Wes Breckenridge and all—

By:  Superior Educator, Dr. Sue Atkinson

I would be remiss if I did not provide balance to the misguided educator ramblings cited in your 2-10-17 fake news, Newsletter.

According to a survey of Iowa superintendents, conducted by Senate Democrats, about 2/3 of them will be forced to raise class size, cut teachers, and reduce opportunities for students if lawmakers approve a 2% or lower increase in basic school funding

These are the fake news ramblings of Iowa education theories stuck on stupidThey try to fake readers to believe class size and school spending are much more important than they are.  For decades, Iowa educators failed to properly assess their own processes, blaming the victim students and discriminating against them, costing the state billions of dollars chasing false claims of potential improvement – that never did materialize.  See 75 year Iowa school failure chart on http://www.iowalive.net/failuresandfix.htm

The OECD, administrator of the international PISA exams, also collects additional educational data.  These links address class size in perspective:

IMPORTANCE OF FAKE NEWS CLASS SIZE DEBUNKED

The countries out-educating us are not achieving this through smaller class size, as the report indicates; they are achieving this through effective teaching of concepts to all learning styles.

If Iowa’s teacher training programs were not assessed as failures by the National Council on Teacher Quality, if the state set quality standards for licensing (as recommended by the NCTQ), effective teachers would be graduating from the programs in Iowa ready to achieve what other countries – and an increasing number of states – are achieving.  The only thing your wailing for increased school spending does is encourage the dysfunction.
