HOW EDUCATORS RUINED & CAN FIX IOWA'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS

1-3-17

Greetings, IA Legislature Education Committees, Iowa Association of School Boards, and all—

Ms. Bartusek, please forward this post to all Iowa school boards and school superintendents.  Thank you very much!

This post explains how educators in the early 60s ruined Iowa schools.  It  explains the cause and disastrous magnitude of the problem, which except for lives lost, is similar to the sneak attack and sinking of American battleships at Pearl Harbor.   Similarly, educators bombed unsuspecting Iowa schools with this simultaneous, disastrous trifecta of reckless curriculum and teaching methods.

1.    Stopped their teaching of proven phonics methods and curriculum

2.    Forced them to start teaching NEW MATH methods and curriculum

3.    NEW MATH baffled parents and disabled them from teaching their kids, as they had been doing very successfully

a.    It Is Estimated Parents Were Doing 35% Of The Teaching At The Time And Educators Bitterly Complained & Blamed Them When They Were Disabled—That’s What Guilty Educators Do—Blame Others!

4 CHARTS SHOW EDUCATORS DISASTROUSLY RUINED IOWA SCHOOLS & STUDENTS’ PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS

IT WAS DISASTROUS TO STOP PHONICS & SIMULTANEOUSLY START NEW MATH

New  Math Also Prevented Parents From Helping Students

Test Scores Plummeted As A Result—And Have Never Recovered

Educators Reduced Emphasis on Reading & Math From 60% in 1960 to 19% in 2016

As Predicted, Educators Cause Students to Fail and Then Label Them Dyslexic to Exclude Their Low Test Scores—Violating Their Civil Rights!

The Dyslexia Dilemma: A History of Ignorance, Complacency and Resistance in Colleges of Education, released in 2016

Educators Stubbornly Refuse To Take Responsibility For The Disasters They Caused

EDUCATORS CAUSED SHARP FALL IN PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS

Educators knew test scores were falling because the Iowa Testing Program was repeatedly re-norming (dumbing) the tests when less than 50% of the students could pass them.  This happened nearly every third year.  But responsible educators were so busy and satisfied with blaming the failures on the ‘’defective students’ that they looked no further rigorously—and haven’t to this day.  They instead have trial and errored false fixes, such as the 3 most recently failed Summer Reading Programs and the failed Teacher Leadership and Compensation system.  Other past failures are shown in this table.

HOW EDUCATORS SHOULD FIX IOWA’S SCHOOLS

The following 3 fixes will raise Iowa’s schools’ National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Percent Proficient scores and national rank as shown in the following table, at a net total cost not to exceed 3% more than 2016 school costs.  Schools must reallocate spending on things that aren’t working to fixes that are working.

FIXES WILL RAISE IOWA’S SCHOOLS TO TOPS IN THE NATION

BEWARE!   Iowa Educators Will Falsely Claim % at or Above Basic is Equivalent to % at or above Proficient!!

THE 3 SCHOOL FIXES DESPERATELY NEEDED ARE:

Educators must now replace at least what they abandoned and lost in the 60s.  And legislators must not even consider school funding increases until after educators provide them with compelling Pilot Program Proven plans to successfully accomplish the following 3 school fixes, within 2 years—to avoid more fix failures:

1.    *Pilot program results that show the 1960 phonics curriculum and teaching methods have been significantly bettered

2.    *Pilot program results that show the 1960 old math curriculum and teaching methods have been significantly bettered

3.    **Pilot program results that show teaching efficiencies have been improved to more than compensate for the 35% teaching load the parents carried in 1960

Throw out the governor, ISEA teacher union and other obstacles to progress/lobbyists clamoring for increased school funding until after you have the above plans in your warm hands!  Once the plans have compelling performance milestones, legislators should fund the pilot programs.

*Students must gain at least 2 grade levels in one year to prove ‘bettered’ results

**Teachers must  teach 35% more students in class without loss of student achievement to prove improved efficiencies

Iowalive expects there are no educators in the Dept. of Ed., and there are 10 superintendents in the system, who are capable and willing to craft the plans and achieve needed pilot program proof of results.  Legislators must call them out and get schools started on the road back!!  It is better to use educators within the system than to replace them with outsiders!  The 10 superintendents will be named when appropriate.

The following table shows a problem the superintendents will face, and will likely have to resolve with internet help such as  ABC READ http://www.abcread.com .  It  can teach reading in 21 1-hr sessions (to both adults and children for all grade levels) using either DVD programs or picture flash cards to teach the sounds.  The flash cards equate sounds with a picture.

EFFECTIVE TEACHERS ARE  AT LEAST 50% EFFICIENT

They Are No Longer Adequately Trained And Are In Scarce Supply

Only 25% of Iowa college, elementary level, Teacher Training Programs meet the basic National Council of Teacher Quality requirements

Even Worse, Universities Claim They Are Teaching Concepts (Understanding) When They Are Actually Teaching Memorization

Training Teachers to Teach Concepts (Understanding)  is a Lost Skill

Reading Per Se Wasn’t Taught in 12th Grade in 1960

ASSESSMENT WORKSHEETS PROVIDE SCHOOL BOARDS WITH NUMBERS

School boards can and should use assessment worksheets to evaluate a superintendent's abilities as well as to determine the best of the options before the school board.   The superintendent to fil out the worksheet for each recommendation or proposal given to the board.  Example worksheets, which can be tailored to meet any board need, are posted on website: http://www.iowalive.net/assesssheets.htm

P. S.  Here are reasons the similarity to the Pearl Harbor attack was referred to above.   They involve poor judgement and reduced thinking and problem solving skills.

77% of young adults are very or somewhat confident they can safely text while driving.  Nearly 330,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving.

There were 400 Iowa traffic deaths in 2016!  At least 80% involved bad judgement, such as drunk driving, not using seat belts, speeding, using cell phones and other distrractions.  It would take only 6 years to equal the 2,400 casualties at Pearl Harbor.

Educators  get the credit for stopping phonics and starting New Math in Iowa schools!  They cheated approximately 200,000 1 through 6th graders per year for 55 years = 11 million kids out of a good, mind developing education—in Iowa alone.

Americans have lost $33 billion in lifetime incomes due to NEW MATH impaired mind development, calculated as follows.

In U. S. in fall 2016, about 50.4 million students attended public elementary and secondary schools. Of these, 35.4 million are in prekindergarten through grade 8 and 15.0 million are in grades 9 through 12. An additional 5.2 million students are expected to attend private elementary and secondary schools (source).

So to be on the conservative side, assume 15 million kids per year were impaired with New Math etc.  That’s at total of 825 million kids in 55 years.   And it could easily reduce their total lifetime earnings by $1,000 per year per student average for 40 years.  That’s a grand total loss of 1,000  X 825 million X 40 =  $33 billion loss—and educators continue to add 15 million more losers to 825 million each year.  Pearl Harbor was a onetime event.

That’s what an education disaster, as bad or worse than Pearl Harbor, looks like legislators, and you and the media must not allow educators to perpetuate it any longer.
