THE DES MOINES SCHOOL DISTRICT OUGHT TO BE CLOSED & PRIVATIZED!!
While Des Moines school district's accreditation report cited 19 violations, its major failings were not even mentioned.
The report is 3% substance, 40% boiler plate and 57% edubabble.
For example, the report's following charts show the district's academic abuse of its elementary and middle school reading and math students. Less than 65% of the students are claimed to meet the state's 40th National Percentile Rank Student Proficiency standard, which means 35% of the students' reading and math skills average at least 1 1/2 full grades below their enrolled grade level. Just as bad, it means less than 35% of the students' reading and math skills are at or above grade level. But the accreditation report fails to mention this. Student achievement doesn't matter!!
The report picked on much more trivial flaws in the district. It even forces the district to expel one of its top teachers, who is teaching Mandarin Chinese. The teacher does not meet certification requirements, but definitely meets the objectives of producing outstanding student achievement results--which are only emphasized in charter schools. IS THIS HEAVEN? NO, IT'S IOWA!!!
And of course, the constructivist charts differentiate between English Language Learners and Non English Language Learners--as if it made a difference in student learning ability. Judy Hintz, at Educational Resources in West Des Moines, raises all student reading and math skills 5 to 7 grade levels with 27 to 54 one-hour training sessions. These are students the Des Moines and other school districts fail to teach.
