BRILLIANT IA BOARD OF REGENTS' SEARCH PROCESS FOR HIRING UI PRESIDENT HARRELD

1-12-15

Greetings, Cedar Rapids Gazette Editorial Board and all—

A short changed Gazette columnist wrote 730 more words in Sunday’s 10-11-15 C. R. Gazette to show she doesn’t understand the brilliance of the process the Board of Regents successfully used to hire businessman Bruce Harreld as UI president.  Her column followed at least 4,000 words of similar misunderstanding of Harreld’s hiring.

She made it very clear—“This isn't about J. Bruce Harreld. It also isn't only about the University of Iowa.”  She and recalcitrant profs publicly claim they have no complaints about a businessman being president of the university of Iowa.  But they viciously attack, discredit and want to punish the board of regents for the successful way they hired him.   And they haven’t given the board their recommendations for how to successfully search and hire a business person as president, as the board has already successfully accomplished.   Is this craziness or are complainers just telling lies in a devious, unpopular attempt to oust Harreld?

The complaining writers and UI profs howl that the Board didn’t use exactly the same search process for business based Harreld as it did for the education based candidates.  Duh!!   So let’s look at the likely differences in business and education based candidates, just as the Regents looked and wisely adjusted the search process as they valiantly sailed ahead—in these exciting new waters.

PUBLIC EDUCATION VS. BUSINESS BASED UI PRESIDENT CANDIDATES

1.    Public education based candidates actively seek university president positions for prestige, salary and prerequisite benefits

a.    Their primary focus is on lots of money

b.    They are also focused on activities rather than results

c.     They don’t think their performance can be measured, and resent the thought of it—unless it involves more easy money for them and the profs

                                               i.     Adjectives such as running, researching, managing, soliciting, teaching and working, can’t be measured

ii.     Nouns can be measured,  such as results, scores, velocity, grade points, number and amounts of graduate job offers, success etc.

iii.     They don’t hold the customers or owners of the university, the students and public, in high regard

2.    Business people don’t actively seek academia jobs because profs nearly always rule such public institutions and have avoided hiring a business person as President

a.    Business people would have to be very actively recruited and convinced they had the backing of those in charge of the institutions,

                                               i.     In the UI case this includes the Board of Regents, Governor--and at least some of the better performers at the university.

b.    Business based candidates appreciate the challenge of substantially improving an organization’s performance, for its customers and owners.

                                               i.     They are results focused

ii.     They know their performance can be measured and embrace it

iii.     They would likely consider presiding over a university as a job of herding cats

c.     The above and the following table require a substantial difference in the search process—such as the Board brilliantly crafted and effectively utilized.

THE BOARD OF REGENTS BRILLIANTLY  MATCHED THE SEARCH PROCESS TO THE CANDIDATES CONSIDERED

IT OBVIOUSLY TAKES A DIFFERENT SEARCH PROCESS FOR EDUCATION BASED THAN BUSINESS BASED PRESIDENT CANDIDATES.   Source:  Iowalive  10-12-15
